Elementary School (2nd-5th)

St. Michael Catholic School provides a balance between spiritual growth, academic excellence and full participation in activities within a program directed at the growth of the whole person. The elementary curriculum at St. Michael Catholic School includes Religion, Math, Science, Reading/Language Arts, Social Studies, Spanish, Music, Art, Computer and Physical Education.

 



RELIGION - Religion is an integral part of the daily curriculum in all grades. We offer sacramental preparation and students plan and participate in an all-school Mass every week.

TECHNOLOGY - Each classroom has an ActiveBoard, two computers and a printer. In addition, early childhood and elementary students attend computer class in the Mac Lab twice a week and use the Mobile Mac Lab in a variety of ways in the classroom.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE -Early childhood and elementary students use the acclaimed Rosetta Stone Classroom software that develops comprehension, pronunciation, listening, writing and conversation skills of the Spanish language in addition to classroom instruction.

READING/LANGUAGE ARTS - This year we are introducing new reading programs for Early Childhood and Elementary
students. Pre-Kindergarten will implement the Rowland Reading Program “Happily Ever After” and Kindergarten - 5th grade will begin Harcourt’s “Texas Journey’s” program. In addition, students in grades 3rd - 5th participate in the Writers in the Schools (WITS) program lead by writing professionals and authors which emphasizes the power of reading and writing and develops creative and analytical thinking skills.

SCIENCE - TAKScopes is a science software curriculum developed at Rice University. It is used in grades K-5th as an enhancement to the core curriculum. It incorporates a hands-on learning approach which makes science interactive,
challenging and fun for students and teachers alike.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION - “Dynamic P.E.” is a unique physical education program used in grades Pre-K - 5th. This program
develops fundamental motor skills using fun and exciting hands on activities.

FINE ARTS - Music and Art are incorporated into the elementary curriculum on a weekly basis. In addition, students
participate in a variety of contests and programs including Art-A-La-Carte, an enrichment program led by
volunteer parents; the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Art Contest; annual Christmas programs, talent shows and
school plays.

LIBRARY - All students visit the school library once a week on a scheduled basis and whenever a class project requires
library time. We also have two school book fairs each year.
