The lower school curriculum at St. Michael Catholic School includes Religion, Math, Science, Reading/Language Arts, Social Studies, Spanish, Music, Art, Computer and Physical Education.
RELIGION - Religion is an integral part of the daily curriculum in all grades. We offer sacramental preparation and students plan and participate in an all-school Mass every week.
TECHNOLOGY - Each classroom has an ActiveBoard, two computers and a printer. In addition, early childhood and elementary students attend computer class in the Mac Lab twice a week and use the Mobile Mac Lab in a variety of ways in the classroom.
FOREIGN LANGUAGE -Early childhood and elementary students use the acclaimed Duolingo application that develops comprehension, pronunciation, listening, writing and conversation skills of the Spanish language in addition to classroom instruction.
READING/LANGUAGE ARTS - Pre-Kindergarten uses the Rowland Reading Program “Happily Ever After” and Kindergarten - 5th grade uses Harcourt’s “Texas Journey’s” program. In addition, students in grades 3rd - 5th participate in the Writers in the Schools (WITS) program lead by writing professionals and authors which emphasizes the power of reading and writing and develops creative and analytical thinking skills.
MATHMATEICS - The Mathletics program captivates and challenges students in a stimulating, interactive environment. Used by millions of students, Mathletics motivates and engages students in a stimulating and exciting on-line learning community. The easy to use program provides the perfect link between home and school, where results flow seamlessly.
SCIENCE - At SMCS we utilize the Nancy Larson Science program which was created to help teachers provide challenging and meaningful science content to elementary-age children. The topics chosen for each grade level reflect children’s interests and developmental characteristics. The program ensures an in-depth study of topics that help promote long-term learning and understanding of concepts. Lessons build upon one another with the understanding that different sciences are interrelated. For this reason, the program is not a “pick and choose” science topics program but a complete science program that will help students have a broader understanding of science.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION - “Dynamic P.E.” is a unique physical education program used in grades Pre-K - 5th. This program develops fundamental motor skills using fun and exciting hands on activities.
FINE ARTS - Music and Art are incorporated into the elementary curriculum on a weekly basis. In addition, students participate in a variety of contests and programs including Art-A-La-Carte, an enrichment program led by volunteer parent, annual Christmas programs, talent shows and school plays.
LIBRARY - All students visit the school library once a week on a scheduled basis and whenever a class project requires library time. We also have two school book fairs each year.
